What to Check When Comparing Shell Fuel Cards for Business Use

A fuel card sounds simple until your driver can’t find a station that takes it. That’s the real test, not the shiny sign-up bonus on page one. Most Shell cards work at around 1,500 sites across Australia, spread across five fuel brands including Reddy Express and OTR. That number matters more than any discount rate, because a card nobody can use at the pump is worth nothing. Truck drivers get roughly 150 dedicated sites too, which smaller brands rarely offer. If you’re hunting for the best Shell fuel card, start with where it actually works, not what the brochure promises.

How Big Is the Network, Really?

Shell’s card network covers about 1,500 locations nationwide. Five brands take it: Shell, Reddy Express, OTR, Liberty, and Westside. That’s a decent spread for city routes, and most capital city fleets will barely notice a gap. Regional runs are trickier though. A multi brand card built for fleets, like Fleetcard, reaches more than 6,100 sites across 13 fuel brands, covering over 95% of the country’s bowsers. That gap is the whole story right there. One card locks you into a single brand’s map. The other one doesn’t care which flag flies over the station. Heavy vehicle drivers get something extra too: around 150 unmanned truck stops built for low cost refuelling, open at hours a normal site keeper never would be.

What You Actually Get With a Shell Card

  •       flybuys points at Reddy Express sites: half a point for every dollar spent, which is small but it adds up over a year
  •       One combined invoice each billing cycle, built to line up cleanly with your BAS
  •       An online portal for setting driver spending limits and blocking certain purchase types
  •       Direct links to Xero and MYOB, so bookkeeping takes a few less hours each month
  •       A 24 hour phone line to cancel or reissue a lost card right away
  •       Weekly, fortnightly, or monthly billing cycles, so you can match it to your cash flow

What Does It Cost?

Shell charges a $30 annual fee plus about $2.50 a month per card, though new sign ups often get that waived for the first six months. There’s no fee at the pump itself, but paying by Visa or Mastercard adds a 0.4% surcharge on top. You get up to 28 days to settle the bill, which is tight next to some competitors. Those numbers shift often. Check the live offer before you commit to anything in writing. You’ll also need an ABN and a driver over 18 to even open the account, so this isn’t a card for a sole trader still setting up the paperwork.

Is One Brand Enough for Your Fleet?

Here’s my honest take on it.  I’d map your actual delivery routes against Shell’s station list before signing anything, not after. A business driving regional roads most weeks is usually better off with a card that doesn’t care which brand’s sign hangs above the pump. Ask for a site list in your postcode before the sales call ends. It takes five minutes and saves a stranded driver later.
